Goal

Simplify the medical process for students

Overview

StudentCare is a third-party platform offering basic health insurance plans for international students. The platform provides students with the ability to learn about their insurance plan, include fee waivers, and upload medical receipts to claim payment.

Background

Through our own experiences, we have identified certain aspects of the student health benefits journey that significantly impact user experience and could benefit from improvement.

The Problem

Lack of Awareness

Many students are unaware of the benefits that the college's healthcare insurance offers.

Which clinic to visit?

International students unfamiliar with the area may need to learn which clinics are the best or may not know which ones accept insurance or how much.

Reclaiming insurance

The current procedure used by Conestoga requires students to upload their bills to the student care app in order to reclaim their insurance, but very few use it.

Design Process

The design thinking process centers around solving problems by prioritizing the needs of users. By utilizing research methods, we can quickly address product defects based on real user feedback.

User Research

Collect data from interviews

Research Methodology: Interview Method

We conduct one-on-one user interviews to understand their opinions and experiences on student insurance. Through open-ended questions and observation, we can effectively understand their pain points and usage behavior.

  • What challenges did you face in finding partner clinic information?

  • What tools or resources do you use to help you find student health benefits information?

  • What is the main goal you are trying to achieve when you use the Student Health Benefits app?

  • What issues or difficulties in the refund process for health benefits could you not complete as expected?

Summarize of data

Empathy Map

Insights

  • Most international students are interested in exploring nearby clinics to improve their medical knowledge.

  • When students receive medical treatment, they often struggle to properly navigate the process of submitting receipts and obtaining insurance refunds.

  • If it is a first-time user, they may require assistance through helpful information or tutorials.

Outline users: actions to complete their goals

User Story Map

After analyzing the user story map, we discovered that users face obstacles at every stage of their journey and often don't receive feedback on their issues until the end.

Ideation

Track where our competitors are

Competitive Audit

During the ideation phase, we conducted a competitive audit to study the existing solutions provided by our competitors. This helped us understand the advantages and disadvantages of their products. As a result, we gained a clear idea of how insurance apps are evolving and how our product can fit seamlessly into the lives of our users.

The structure of content

Information Architecture

We establish information architecture before creating wireframes for clear page layout design.

UI Flow & Design

Wireframe

We convert digital wireframes into clickable low-fidelity prototypes for usability testing. This helps teams find problems and solve them quickly, reducing the risk of creating a product in the wrong way.

Usability Test

We turned the wireframes into low-fidelity prototypes and conducted usability testing to improve the app.

Research methods

We conducted moderate usability testing through structured one-to-one interviews, which provided 3 situations plus 5 individual tasks interleaved with open-ended questions for 20 minutes for respondents to navigate Studentcare.

To better manage feedback and our observations, we set up a Google Excel worksheet with all tasks listed in the top row. Depending on how easy it was for the respondent to complete the task, we placed a number between 1 and 5 in the corresponding cell, along with a comment. The emotions, feelings, actions and suggestions of the interviewees are recorded in this form.

Research objectives

  • Check that our images and terminology are easy to understand.

  • Check if our functionality is intuitive.

  • Determine if Studentcare is easy to use and provides a smooth user experience.

UI DESIGN STEP 1

Visual Design System

01 Logo

We redesigned the logo and paired it with the word Studentcare. To make it more impressive, we designed a medical logo and student icons that represent the core functionality of the app.

02 Colour Palette

Blue and green are calming colors that can create a soothing environment, important in healthcare settings where patients may feel anxious. The slow transition between the colors creates a sense of movement and depth, enhancing the calming effect.

Post-redesign, our goal is to enhance the app experience for users. We want them to browse more insurance coverage details, inquire about collaborating clinics, and submit insurance receipts. We aim to boost user engagement and satisfaction.

Key Takeaways

Although the Studentcare app may not be widely recognized among international students, we have investigated and redesigned it to address its current issues. Our program is designed to educate more students about their insurance rights.

User experience design involves more than just planning the layout. In this project, we learned how to focus on the big picture without getting bogged down by small problems. We also learned how to conduct in-depth user experience research by asking the right questions and generating insights to identify real problems.

------------

Most importantly, we must understand the underlying problem we are trying to solve.
